I haven't posted anything in ages, except for moving my old blog to here and posting on my book blog. Other then that I've been getting distracted by life.
I've also had a new project I've been working on. It's something I've been wanting to do for ages. I'm bisexual and I went around looking for a decent on line forum for bisexual women and only found one. Thing is it's so busy. Like 9000 plus members or something crazy like that and I don't have the time or energy to go through all those posts so I've been thinking of creating one myself and I finally did it!
I've taken a week to create it and it's been fun. I've made sure I've added a bunch of features that the standard proboards doesn't come with, along with a few skins (and more on the way), different emoticons and avatars.
At the moment I'm just talking to myself on there which probably isn't different from usual, but it's ok. I've been working hard on having different topics and even have a list of subjects to start so it's not like there's nothing to reply to if people join.
I'm working hard with it I am and having fun too. Now I just have to decide if I want to affiliate with anyone.
That's one of the things I've been doing since posting last.
I'm not really up to blogging at the moment so here's a trailer of the Wolverine movie which I am so going to see!
Here's a game I wouldn't mind playing even though I've only read the first part of the Divine Comedy and don't have an Xbox360. I think the dog things look a bit funny though, but still a pretty good trailer. Fun to watch at least.
I don't usually play shooter games. I mainly play games that involve swords or blades of some type. Actually I think the last time I played an actual shooter game all the way through was Resident Evil when Playstation 2 wasn't even in existence yet. Other then that I've played a few here and there but only parts of it (when others are playing) and nothing I ever planned on playing. So this is a bit of a new experience for me in a way and it's an experience I'm enjoying thoroughly. Apart from giving me a headache Dead Space is an awesome game.
The basic story is you're part of a repair crew going into deep space to find a ship (The USG Ishimura) to repair because it has lost radio contact. Clarke (our character) is also on a personal mission after receiving a personal message from a member of the rogue ship. When the crew arrive there seems to be something a bit suss going on, especially seeing as there is no flood lights on and there is no radio contact at all. So your ship tries to dock in with Ishimura only for it all to go wrong and your own ship becomes damaged leaving you stranded on the Ishimura. You get seperated from your crew mates and end up having to do a series of semi missions to get everything going again.
Being in the horror genre you'd expect a lot of dark ambience and it delivers. I think that's one of my favourite parts of the game. There is blood and gore all over the ship, smeared on floors where people have either crawled after beingattacked or have been dragged. Words written in blood on the walls. Blood splatter and smears on the wall as well. Dismembered bodies strewn around and not always the whole body to put together. Cadavers in body bags with flies buzzing around (and you can hear them really well). Broken furniture, windows and basically the whole place has been trashed. Big holes ripped in the walls in some places which makes you wonder at the sheer size of whatever created it (I was grabbed by one and it was brilliant). Then you find people and can't always help them. It's like they don't know you're there and they partake in really odd behaviour which is so unexpected and disturbing.
Another thing that adds to the ambience is lights. The lights are on sometimes and then other times they flicker so you can hardly see anything. Other times still they aren't on at all or they go off all of a sudden and you can't see anything but you can hear things. With the combination of the music (which is excellent and greatly atmospheric), the odd creaks and groans from the ship, your movements and breathing, you also get noises from the odd creatures that have infested the ship. Sometimes you hear them breathing, sometimes you hear them running in the air vents and other times you get to hear just how squishy they are when they're dead and you kick or step on them.
I love the creatures. You find out pretty quickly that just shooting them will not kill them. You have to dismember them or else they keep coming for you and even then if you only shoot off their legs they will still keep coming for you. They have blade like appendages for their arms and they'll drag themselves to you all the while snarling and making horrible wet noises. Add to that your breathing can get ragged and if the lights are out it seems sometimes there might be more then one lurking in the dark but you can't always be sure. Those are just the main creatures. There are other ones that are smaller (like the babies) and bigger ones and ones you have to make sure you kill if you're in a room full of corpses.
To go with slaughtering the monsters you get some awesome weapons. I thought the line gun was cool but last night I got the Ripper which is a remote controlled chain saw sort of gun. It dispenses a chain saw disc and you not only cut off limbs but hack the shit out of those bastards.
There's other cool things but you can find out for yourself.
Now I know I react oddly to creative violence. Rather then squealing and screaming like an idiot (that's what chicks are meant to do right? Scream and hold someone's hand and then go home and have nightmares?) in pure terror. I giggle. I laugh. I exclaim how "f*cking awesome" a cool effect is or particular type of violent act is (like in a movie I watched years ago, one of the characters got sliced in half with glass and you got to see all the entrails). When I'm surprised of course I swear in surprise but it's not an upset sort of swearing but a "this is brilliant" swearing. I swear in glee.
So basically, with this whole game so far, I have laughed, giggled and sworn in pure delight. I highly recommend playing it.
I used to collect them when I was younger. Not a few years back younger or teen years younger but child younger. At some point I got over that little fascination because I decided bookmarks just aren't that exciting and they aren't really. Sometimes they aren't even that pretty. Now if there were Luis Royo bookmarks (are there?) then I'd collect them. I'd collect the crap out of them but the bookmarks I get just aren't worth collecting.
Besides what's the point of going out of your way to collect them when you end up with a stack of them anyway?
So far I have...
- A Library one (comes in handy because it has library times)
- Unleash Books x 4
- www.juiceville.com.au (from a book)
- Books Alive
- NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
- Angus & Robertson Top 100 List
- Breaking Dawn
- Bookfound.com
- Brisingr
- The Lace Reader
- Frogs - "Fidget Frog and Friends" apparently
- Seals - "Sinbad-Sally Seal and Friends" to be exact
- Aquarius x 2
- Popular Penguins
A really perverse thing I've noticed when it comes to bookmarks is I can't seem to get rid of them....
Last year, about August, I started a forum. I already have one other forum, Blue Butterflies: A ME/CFS & FMS support forum, so starting a forum wasn't a new thing for me. After looking for a forum that caters to my tastes but only finding overly goth forums (which is not what I wanted, sure I'm a goth at heart but they didn't cater to movies, art and literature, surprisingly) I thought stuff it! I'm going to create my own. So I did.
Thing is I created it and then it died in the arse, probably didn't help that I wasn't up to posting that much but I don't think it was really attractive as a forum... Or maybe it was just a crap idea, who knows.
Anyway I gutted it and rebuilt it and now it's all set to go again!
La Notte: Dark and Alternative Culture
It was surprising how much fun it was taking it apart and redoing it. So if anyone wants to start a forum I'll do it for you, gladly :p
I was tagged again. Seems to be a few tags going around on Facebook at the moment and seeing as I've been too out of it to post anything that involves using my brain to an exceptional degree (basically anything worth reading), I thought I'd just bore everyone with this sort of stuff instead. I don't usually tag people so if you want to have a crack at it go ahead, don't wait for me to ask you... Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go deal with a stupid impending migraine.
The deal is you are meant to write 25 random things about yourself, and
then tag 25 friends, including the person who tagged you. I'm not
tagging 25 people, but here are 25 random facts about me..
1. I have a fish, he is awesome, a carnivorous evil mastermind who wants to secretly take over the world
2. I am a bibliophile and a bibliophage...
3. I also love words hence using the titles bibliophile and bibliophage.... I read the dictionary, I actually leaf through it about 5-6 times a week on average. Then there is using the thesaurus part and the little extras my dictionary comes with that isn't included in that average.
4. Boots are awesome! I'm like zombie with boots, instead of Mmmm brains! It's Mmm boots!
5. I'm struggling.... I think I'm going to be struggling to come up with 25 random pieces of useless info about myself. Coming up with 25 pieces of useless facts with other stuff sure, random useless facts that have nothing to do with anything.... That's a different story.
6. I've never had a broken bone, never broken anything just sprained my ankles and pulled muscles a bunch of time
7. I have a phobia of heights, bees and wasps.
8. I talk to spiders. They're so lovely...
9. I love martial arts movies but have never watched a Bruce Lee movie. Saw parts of two but they didn't do it for me enough to watch the whole lot or any others.
10. I also love art house, horror, world cinema, anything weird and wonderful (like The Savage Planet) but I hate romantic soppy movies (and books). I don't mind a bit of rom com but chick flicks, overly soppy chick flicks, make me roll my eyes and well shudder really... Which is probably why I have never watched the whole of Titanic
11. I'm bisexual and proud
12. God Of War is my favouritest game franichise ever. I want my own Kratos but I think he'd piss me off and scare me... I also love other games that involve awesome swords and slashing and hacking people to bits :)
13. It's best not to talk to me about food and eating
14. Yay! GNW is back on Monday! Struggling again with more useless info
15. I thought of something and then I forgot it again...
16. I don't drink or smoke but I used to do both pretty heavily. Drinking and smoking are terrible...
17. I love Dexter. I love the show and I've started reading the books. Dexter is awesome
18. I am a struggling writer.... Struggling to write lol. I started writing a novel last year, have the plot all sorted, characters etc but am having a crap time writing it. Mainly because of my health but also because of fear of failure and disappointment etc. So I basically have a novel running around in my head with no where to go :(
19.... Um... I'm up to 19.... far out
20. I have clogs
21. I don't have my ears pierced (I don't have anything pierced) and I don't have any tatts
22. I would like to learn Latin one of these days... Plan on it at some point.
23. I have learnt German, French and Italian but aren't fluent in any of them anymore although I do recognise some of it when I see it.
24. I'm ticklish, the "kick people" type of ticklish (also "scream in one's ear" ticklish)
25. I used to believe in aliens, the little green men aliens, now though it's as micro organisms and bacteria, not little green men.
Here are the rules - post this list on your profile (in Notes) replacing my answers with yours.
Tag 13 people to do the same thing...OR ELSE!!!! If I tagged YOU, it's because I want to know more about YOU!
Them's the rules but I don't follow rules with these things, nor do I tag people. So if you wish to go ahead and if not don't!

I'm a fan of procrastination and I'm sure other procrastination fans have found many a way to procrastinate.
I found a beauty on the weekend. My intention was to buy Saints Row 2 thanks to a recommendation from a friend who knows I like violent games (I may be a pacifist but I'm still a violent creature by nature). As per usual they didn't have it (it's rare places do have something I want...) so I ended up buying two other games. Dead Space (yay) which I haven't gotten to yet and Oblivion: Game Of The Year Edition.
What a brilliant mindless way to procrastinate! I don't usually play fantasy-esque type games (with the exception of one Harry Potter game), it used to be car games (like NFSU) but now it's all about hacking strange creatures (sounds fantasy-esque but to me it's not). I'm a God Of War fan. That game to me is like... (at the risk of sounding like a dork) Sex in a disc, but not really... Because then that would make it porn wouldn't it? GoW isn't porn it's delicious violence wrapped up in lovely graphics.
*ahem* moving along now...
So I bought Oblivion because it had big swords on the back cover. Stupid reason to buy a game huh? I figure if it hasswords I can hack things to bits which I get to do but I am a bit disconcerted with the amount of animals I have to kill. Your character gets attacked by wolves, dogs and mudcrabs (yeah mudcrabs of all creatures lol) and you have to kill them. I don't like that idea, I only like hacking either make believe creatures or people to bits, but other then that, great way to procrastinate. It's all I've been doing all week besides trying to read War of the Worlds (really good) but it's taken me days to read a 180 page book. There's so much to do I don't know if it will ever end. You can spend hours changing outfits, stealing from people, walking around aimlessly and finding things to explore, gathering ingredients to create potions (that I never use), fixing things, talking to people and bribing them for the hell of it. Kinda painful actually.
Oh and it has maps... I love maps...
I may offend some women, I apologise in advance.
Several
books ago I had a feeling I was reaching my tolerance limit with young
adult fiction. Basically I'd overdosed and couldn't deal with it
anymore, but after yesterday I think it might not actually be young
adult fiction I have the problem with. Instead I think it might be
paranormal romance and female writers.
Why do I keep reading paranormal romance when I don't really like it? I'm sadomasochistic. Explains everything, to me at least.
Seriously though I woke up this morning feeling a great deal of shame, irritation and disgust with myself and female authors. Kind of like when you know you shouldn't drink because you make an arse out of yourself but because you're an idiot with a drinking problem (no offence to anyone with a drinking problem. I have one, I'm offending myself too) you can't seem to help yourself and end up making a huge arse of yourself yet again, in public view, and thereafter have to live with the shame of your very public, very humiliating antics.
I am suffering from a shame hang over.
Aren't these authors embarrassed with themselves? I know my womanhood is embarrassed for them along with my intelligence being highly offended.
I should probably give more of an explanation rather then just ranting.
Yesterday I read Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. Not a bad book in general. It was well written, had a solid storyline, a happy ending (urgh), but it's not something I would have otherwise read if I hadn't strayed in the last year or so from
my usual genres and for two reasons 1. I realised yesterday I don't really care for werewolf fiction. When it involves actual clinical lycanthropy then I'm interested because that condition is fascinating, but otherwise I've never really been into the whole werewolf theme (odd seeing as I'm trying to write a novel with werewolves in it huh?) and 2. I don't like girly, lovey dovey stuff and this mentioned a chick with an ex lover in the synopsis. Those are big warning signs to me, alarm bells go off in my head when I see key words like that. Thought I'd still read it anyway out of curiosity. Sometimes I think my curiosity hates me.In all honesty it wasn't a bad story (I do enjoy some aspects of PA, mainly the humour and the vampire aspect of it until I realise how wrong those vampires are, but I remain hopeful that they turn and kill people by the end of it), it had a steady pace, I liked the werewolves for the most part (I have a whole problem with the werewolf hierarchy when it's done written in the pack mentality and not as lone wolves) and when it got further to the end I rejoiced at the violent action until, very sadly, that violent action abruptly ended and it turned into a happy ending.
For the most part I have no problems with happy endings, but when it's a love scenario that involves a happy ending I want to throw up or throw the book in disgust. Seeing as neither of those possibilities are even remotely pleasant I finish the book in silent simmering anger and try to let it go (or other words rant to myself).
I admit I want some doom and gloom. I love some doom and gloom, not because I'm a depressed individual who wants to wallow in despair but because it's more realistic of human nature and has more meaning. Happy love endings are not realistic (I know I'm not reading for realism purposes but come on!) and they make me question female authors which does make me quite depressed. Are there really that many women who are so vapid? Do women really buy into that whole love scenario with a happy ever after? Do they really want that? Or am I just being a freak of nature (as per usual by some peoples perspective)? I have pondered that idea more then I care to admit because I feel it may be a definite possibility. Oh how annoying
I think I have to go read something deep, like Brave New World, because now I feel so dirty (and not in a good way), but I have one more. One more book to read by a female author about female characters who will once again probably fall in love with something they're usually meant to fear and well... stake.
